Thanksgiving for Faith, Family, and Freedom

Friday, November 26th, 2010

First Thanksgiving

We at Freedom Film Distributors are very thankful this year.  Thankful that we are nearing the completion of our first year in operation.  Thankful for our staff and families.  Thankful for our distributors and their families.  Thankful for our movie night hosts.  Thankful for the producers that have partnered with us to promote their films through our unique distribution model.  Thankful for you, our supporters and customers, who have helped us spread the message of grassroots film distribution.

As Americans, we must be thankful and remember the providences of God in the life of our nation – both today and in times past.  While people often remember what they are thankful for in the past year, few remember what to be thankful for from 100 or 200 or 300 years ago.  To help us remember, let's enlist the aid of some of our founding fathers to remind us of our blessed and godly heritage, that it might encourage us to be thankful and to work diligently to preserve and carry on the godly legacy of Faith, Family, and Freedom that we have been recipients of.

William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth colony, wrote of the Pilgrims' arrival in Cape Cod in 1621:  William Bradford statue

"Being thus arrived in a good harbor, and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof, again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element. …

But here I cannot but stay and make a pause, and stand half amazed at this poor people's present condition; and so I think will the reader, too, when he well considers the same. Being thus passed the vast ocean, and a sea of troubles before in their preparation (as may be remembered by that which went before), they had now no friends to welcome them nor inns to entertain or refresh their weatherbeaten bodies; no houses or much less town to repair to, to seek for succour. It is recorded in Scripture as a mercy to the Apostle and his shipwrecked company, that the barbarians showed them no small kindness in refreshing them, but these savage barbarians, when they met with them (as after will appear) were readier to fill their sides full of arrows than otherwise. And for the season it was winter, and they that know the winters of that country know them to be sharp and violent, and subject-to cruel and fierce storms, dangerous to travel to known places, much more to search an unknown coast. Besides, what could they see but a hideous and desolate wilderness, fall of wild beasts and wild men—and what multitudes there might be of them they knew not. … If they looked behind them, there was the mighty ocean which they had passed and was now as a main bar and gulf to separate them from all the civil parts of the world.

What could now sustain them but the Spirit of God and His grace? May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: "Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness; but they cried unto the Lord, and He heard their voice and looked on their adversity," "Let them therefore praise the Lord, because He is good: and His mercies endure forever."

The Continental Congress declared a national day of Thanksgiving and prayer in 1777:  Second Continental Congress

" Forasmuch as it is the indispensable duty of all men to adore the superintending providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with gratitude their obligation to him for benefits received, and to implore such farther blessings as they stand in need of; and it having pleased him in his abundant mercy not only to continue to us the innumerable bounties of his common providence, but also smile upon us in the prosecution of a just and necessary war, for the defense and establishment of our unalienable rights and liberties; particularly in that he hath been pleased in so great a measure to prosper the means used for the support of our troops and to crown our arms with most signal success:

It is therefore recommended to the legislative or executive powers of these United States, to set apart Thursday, the 18th day of December next, for solemn thanksgiving and praise; that with one heart and one voice the good people may express the grateful feelings of their hearts, and consecrate themselves to the service of their divine benefactor; and that together with their sincere acknowledgments and offerings, they may join the penitent confession of their manifold sins, whereby they had forfeited every favor, and their humble and earnest supplication that it may please God, through the merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to forgive and blot them out of remembrance; that it may please him graciously to afford his blessings on the governments of these states respectively, and prosper the public council of the whole; to inspire our commanders both by land and sea, and all under them, with that wisdom and fortitude which may render them fit instruments, under the providence of Almighty God, to secure for these United States the greatest of all blessings, independence and peace; that it may please him to prosper the trade and manufactures of the people and the labor of the husbandman, that our land may yield its increase; to take schools and seminaries of education, so necessary for cultivating the principles of true liberty, virtue and piety, under his nurturing hand, and to prosper the means of religion for the promotion and enlargement of that kingdom which consisteth in righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

And it is further recommended, that servile labor, and such recreation as, though at other times innocent, may be unbecoming the purpose of this appointment, be omitted on so solemn an occasion."

President George Washington issued the first presidential proclamation of the United States in 1789:  George Washington

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor– and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be– That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks–for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation–for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war–for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed–for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted–for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions– to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually–to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed–to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord–To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us–and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Geo: Washington

We have much to be thankful for.  Let us remember, be grateful, and tell the generations to come of God's faithfulness.

I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. — Psalm 78:2-4

Special Report from the Providential History Festival

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

We're happy to share this report from our distributors in Omaha, Nebraska, Brian and Kit Fox, who this past weekend attended the Providential History Festival.

The Fox Family was a Bronze Sponsor of the Providential History Festival this past weekend at the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, NE. The Festival showcased speeches, dramas, table displays, short stories, and essays all focused on the providence of God throughout history. It is an amazing event that we encourage you all to attend next year!

Providential History Festival

At the Festival we were able to display and sell our great line of Freedom Films. We had the opportunity to meet many new people and also let our friends see what we have been up to these past several months. People we met were excited about the vision of Freedom Film Distributors and look forward to seeing more of us in the future.   We recently booked a venue for our first Family Movie Night and we were able to get the word out to a large audience.

 Providential History Festival

It was wonderful to have our whole family working together, from the planning stages to the final event. One of our most important goals for our involvement with Freedom Film Distributors is to use it as an entrepreneurship training tool for our five sons. It is exciting to see them use their unique giftings in our venture. It's also great to be able to stretch them each a bit so we can all grow in our abilities.

Fox family at Providential History Festival

A couple of special opportunities arose from this event. First, we met a local radio personality who is willing to do a short interview of our family to let the community know about Freedom Film Distributors! Also, we had the privilege of announcing the awards in the drama category, giving us stage time to talk about our vision and the ability to present the winner with a gift from the Freedom Film Distributors catalog.

While we have done several Freedom Film events this summer, this was our largest local event so far. It was great to share our family and distributor vision with those in our community. We look forward to the opportunity to serve in new and exciting ways, starting with our first movie night next month.

A More Perfect Union: America Becomes a Nation

A More Perfect Union:

America Becomes a Nation

AMERICA, 1786. Ten years have past since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. But America's hopes for a united country are dangerously threatened. England wages a new war of unfair trade and tariffs. Fragmented states continually bicker over currencies, trade, taxations. America is a powder keg ready to explode.

But a handful of brilliant courageous men, James Madison, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin, lead a three year diplomatic battle that culminates in Philadelphia. There they created a new form of government…one that has been the standard of liberty for the rest of the world.

A More Perfect Union—the first comprehensive film enactment of the birth of the Constitution was shot on location at Independence Hall and other historic locations in Virginia. It features a distinguished staff and has been carefully crafted by a seasoned staff of motion picture professionals.

A More Perfect Union is a timeless film capturing the spirit and determination of the framers of the US Constitution as they looked well beyond their own time to insure a nation built upon justice, morality, faith in God, and empowered by the people themselves.

Happy Birthday George Washington Carver – special birthday savings on An Uncommon Way DVD

George Washington Carver

July 12th is the birthday of a special man in America's history: George Washington Carver.  We are offering a special birthday discount on our George Washington Carver DVD – you can find the details at the bottom of this post.  American historian Bill Federer notes this about Carver:

"Born a slave around July 12th, 1864, George Washington Carver became a scientist of international renown. On January 21, 1921, Carver addressed the United States House Ways and Means Committee on behalf of the United Peanut Growers Association on the use of peanuts to improve Southern economy. Initially given ten minutes to speak, the committee was so captivated, his time was extended. Explaining the many products derived from the peanut, including milk, mock beef and mock chicken, George Washington Carver stated: "If you go to the first chapter of Genesis, we can interpret very clearly, I think, what God intended when he said 'Behold, I have given you every herb that bears seed. To you it shall be meat.' This is what He means about it. It shall be meat. There is everything there to strengthen and nourish and keep the body alive and healthy." After nearly two hours, the chairman asked: "Dr. Carver, how did you learn all of these things?" Carver answered: "From an old book" "What book?" asked the Chairman. Carver replied, "The Bible." The Chairman inquired, "Does the Bible tell about peanuts?" "No, Sir" Dr. Carver replied, "It tells about the God who made the peanut. I asked Him to show me what to do with the peanut and He did."

The George Washington Carver documentary beautifully traces the valiant life of George Washington Carver, chronicling his improbable odyssey from slavery to becoming a household name.  Get 20% off the DVD at the Freedom Web Store by using coupon code carver20 at checkout, offer good now through July 31st.

Scott Eash, Director of Distributor Support

Scott Eash, Director of Distributor Support

My name is Scott Eash and I’m the Director of Distributor Support at Freedom Film Distributors.  I’m here to serve our reps, answer their questions, and make sure they receive all the marketing resources they need.  I am a film producer and film distributor who has been involved in marketing independent films for some time now.  When I first began in filmmaking, I came to realize that I faced a problem – I didn’t know how to market the films I produced.  I looked around me and saw that other filmmakers were facing the same problem.  That’s when I began studying film distribution, which eventually let me to start a film distribution company to help independent Christian filmmakers.  I had the pleasure of being involved in the marketing of Heartstrings, The Monstrous Regiment of Women, and other God-honoring films.

Those experiences, along with an internship at Franklin Springs Family Media, have prepared me for my current position at Freedom Film Distributors.  I’m excited about the potential for changing the culture, one community and one distributor at a time!

A Cause To Believe In

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Jason Matyas, Director of Marketing & Recruiting

The story of Freedom Film Distributors is just beginning, and there will be many chapters written in the coming years.  This is an attempt to add one of the initial chapters to that story, in the form of my story of how I came to be involved with the Freedom Film Distributors team.

The essential aim of Freedom Film Distributors is to change the culture through the permeation of God-honoring films in our society, to supplant the God-hating films that currently predominate.  This effort will largely be worked out in families, and the effect desired through our films is that of family reformation.  The family is the primary institution of human government, and is the building block of both church and civil government.  It is therefore of primary importance in its need for reformation.

This is important, because the journey to my current involvement with Freedom Film Distributors began with a family reformation.  While I was excelling in a military career as an Air Force pilot, on a path for early promotion and command, God turned my heart to my family and grounded there a realization of the importance of establishing the foundation of a godly heritage for my children and grandchildren.  What quickly followed was a 180 degree turn of my life course, with the realization that in order to disciple my children most effectively, I needed to homeschool them; in order to homeschool them most effectively, I need to be home as much as possible; in order to be home as much as possible, I needed to become an entrepreneur that was able to decide my priorities and time commitments.  So I determined to leave active duty after over 11 years and strike off with my clan into the uncharted waters of entrepreneurship.

After God’s great providence in giving me some wonderful mentors and opportunities to quickly learn many aspects of entrepreneurial business, I have developed some important skills in the use of information technology and its application to many business challenges, among them marketing, sales, training, planning, and business processes.  I was fortunate to have the opportunity to lead a turnaround of a troubled computer training organization for my primary mentor and spearhead the launch of a social media marketing service for a successful internet marketing entrepreneur.  Networking, and social networking especially, has been very important in my development as a business leader, and it was through networking that I found and worked on both of those former efforts.

So it should come as no surprise that I learned of and was offered a role in the launch of Freedom Film Distributors through a connection initiated on Facebook.  Steve Morales, the founder of FFD, contacted me after seeing interactions that I had had with some of his friends on Facebook and he noted our likemindedness on some important issues, as well as my background in social media.  After a short conversation and reviewing a description of the business model and goals, I was immediately interested in the opportunity, even though my background was not specifically in the film industry.

Freedom Film Distributors is rather unique, because in an age of mega corporations with their vast bureaucracies and where a growing role of ecommerce in product sales has marginalized many traditional sales channels, it seeks to go back to the old paths by offering entrepreneurs a chance to run their own businesses and impact their communities through a local distribution strategy.  This is not only unconventional, but also somewhat counter to the trend occurring with media sales in general.  And it is precisely because of that counter-cultural nature that it will succeed.  By relying on independent distributors across the country that operate as entrepreneurs, many of the constraints on the creativity and resourcefulness inherent with a smaller team will be eliminated and allow these distributors to do what works most effectively in their territory.  Furthermore, since the distributors are members of a network that will utilize collaboration tools and have the support of a corporate office that provides training and support resources, the advancements made by individual distributors will be shared, used, and improved by others in the network, leading to greater effectiveness for the whole.  A distributed entrepreneurial effort in this Freedom Film Distributors network will be a key to our success.  We will be a family of families, all providing mutual support for each other.  And our efforts will be impacting families in our local communities and throughout the nation, as God uses relationships with our distributors and the medium of film to communicate His message of hope, and thus cause reformation in those families, then in the church and civil society as well.

After quickly realizing all of this, and having recently freed up some time for a new venture, I accepted Steve’s offer to join the team with great excitement and anticipation for the things that God will do through Freedom Film Distributors.  We have found others that have likewise caught the vision and enthusiastically raised their hands to join the team.  Would you prayerfully consider the opportunity to join our team and let others know about it as well?
