Thanksgiving for Faith, Family, and Freedom

First Thanksgiving

We at Freedom Film Distributors are very thankful this year.  Thankful that we are nearing the completion of our first year in operation.  Thankful for our staff and families.  Thankful for our distributors and their families.  Thankful for our movie night hosts.  Thankful for the producers that have partnered with us to promote their films through our unique distribution model.  Thankful for you, our supporters and customers, who have helped us spread the message of grassroots film distribution.

As Americans, we must be thankful and remember the providences of God in the life of our nation – both today and in times past.  While people often remember what they are thankful for in the past year, few remember what to be thankful for from 100 or 200 or 300 years ago.  To help us remember, let's enlist the aid of some of our founding fathers to remind us of our blessed and godly heritage, that it might encourage us to be thankful and to work diligently to preserve and carry on the godly legacy of Faith, Family, and Freedom that we have been recipients of.

William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth colony, wrote of the Pilgrims' arrival in Cape Cod in 1621:  William Bradford statue

"Being thus arrived in a good harbor, and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof, again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element. …

But here I cannot but stay and make a pause, and stand half amazed at this poor people's present condition; and so I think will the reader, too, when he well considers the same. Being thus passed the vast ocean, and a sea of troubles before in their preparation (as may be remembered by that which went before), they had now no friends to welcome them nor inns to entertain or refresh their weatherbeaten bodies; no houses or much less town to repair to, to seek for succour. It is recorded in Scripture as a mercy to the Apostle and his shipwrecked company, that the barbarians showed them no small kindness in refreshing them, but these savage barbarians, when they met with them (as after will appear) were readier to fill their sides full of arrows than otherwise. And for the season it was winter, and they that know the winters of that country know them to be sharp and violent, and subject-to cruel and fierce storms, dangerous to travel to known places, much more to search an unknown coast. Besides, what could they see but a hideous and desolate wilderness, fall of wild beasts and wild men—and what multitudes there might be of them they knew not. … If they looked behind them, there was the mighty ocean which they had passed and was now as a main bar and gulf to separate them from all the civil parts of the world.

What could now sustain them but the Spirit of God and His grace? May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: "Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness; but they cried unto the Lord, and He heard their voice and looked on their adversity," "Let them therefore praise the Lord, because He is good: and His mercies endure forever."

The Continental Congress declared a national day of Thanksgiving and prayer in 1777:  Second Continental Congress

" Forasmuch as it is the indispensable duty of all men to adore the superintending providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with gratitude their obligation to him for benefits received, and to implore such farther blessings as they stand in need of; and it having pleased him in his abundant mercy not only to continue to us the innumerable bounties of his common providence, but also smile upon us in the prosecution of a just and necessary war, for the defense and establishment of our unalienable rights and liberties; particularly in that he hath been pleased in so great a measure to prosper the means used for the support of our troops and to crown our arms with most signal success:

It is therefore recommended to the legislative or executive powers of these United States, to set apart Thursday, the 18th day of December next, for solemn thanksgiving and praise; that with one heart and one voice the good people may express the grateful feelings of their hearts, and consecrate themselves to the service of their divine benefactor; and that together with their sincere acknowledgments and offerings, they may join the penitent confession of their manifold sins, whereby they had forfeited every favor, and their humble and earnest supplication that it may please God, through the merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to forgive and blot them out of remembrance; that it may please him graciously to afford his blessings on the governments of these states respectively, and prosper the public council of the whole; to inspire our commanders both by land and sea, and all under them, with that wisdom and fortitude which may render them fit instruments, under the providence of Almighty God, to secure for these United States the greatest of all blessings, independence and peace; that it may please him to prosper the trade and manufactures of the people and the labor of the husbandman, that our land may yield its increase; to take schools and seminaries of education, so necessary for cultivating the principles of true liberty, virtue and piety, under his nurturing hand, and to prosper the means of religion for the promotion and enlargement of that kingdom which consisteth in righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

And it is further recommended, that servile labor, and such recreation as, though at other times innocent, may be unbecoming the purpose of this appointment, be omitted on so solemn an occasion."

President George Washington issued the first presidential proclamation of the United States in 1789:  George Washington

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor– and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be– That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks–for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation–for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war–for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed–for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted–for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions– to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually–to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed–to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord–To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us–and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

We have much to be thankful for.  Let us remember, be grateful, and tell the generations to come of God's faithfulness.

I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. — Psalm 78:2-4

Sharing family friendly films at the fall festival

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Even though it was near 80 degrees, it was undeniable: autumn had arrived.  This is fortunate, because Saturday was the 28th annual Craig County Fall Festival in New Castle, Virginia.  It's always nice to have the aroma of fall in the air when the Fall Festival arrives.

Craig County Fall Festival, New Castle VA

My family and I enjoyed a glorious warm fall day on Saturday at the festival. We were one of many vendors that set up a booth and interacted with our neighbors and community in this quaint little town tucked in a valley in the Virginia Highlands. We had the opportunity to meet some of our neighbors in the area, which is one of the most important reasons that we come to these events, and even got to meet some wonderful people that were visiting from out of state, which is great, because they can spread the word about what Freedom Film Distributors is doing in a completely different area.

The festival had live music, including performances by a popular (and very good) local bluegrass band, and there was funnel cakes and other tasty treats to be had as well. Local vendors sold all sorts of great items, from locally farmed produce to homemade health and beauty products.  Since the election is coming up, the candidates all had booths and were meeting and talking to the voters.  It was a wonderful piece of Americana that many do not get to experience much anymore.  We are fortunate to live in a rural community where this is the norm and life has been like this for decades.

We're looking forward to our Distributors and Movie Night Hosts contributing to this kind of community interaction in growing frequency in the future.  Sign up to get our email news and updates, and Like our Facebook page to keep in touch with us.

Special Report from the Providential History Festival

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

We're happy to share this report from our distributors in Omaha, Nebraska, Brian and Kit Fox, who this past weekend attended the Providential History Festival.

The Fox Family was a Bronze Sponsor of the Providential History Festival this past weekend at the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, NE. The Festival showcased speeches, dramas, table displays, short stories, and essays all focused on the providence of God throughout history. It is an amazing event that we encourage you all to attend next year!

At the Festival we were able to display and sell our great line of Freedom Films. We had the opportunity to meet many new people and also let our friends see what we have been up to these past several months. People we met were excited about the vision of Freedom Film Distributors and look forward to seeing more of us in the future.   We recently booked a venue for our first Family Movie Night and we were able to get the word out to a large audience.

It was wonderful to have our whole family working together, from the planning stages to the final event. One of our most important goals for our involvement with Freedom Film Distributors is to use it as an entrepreneurship training tool for our five sons. It is exciting to see them use their unique giftings in our venture. It's also great to be able to stretch them each a bit so we can all grow in our abilities.

A couple of special opportunities arose from this event. First, we met a local radio personality who is willing to do a short interview of our family to let the community know about Freedom Film Distributors! Also, we had the privilege of announcing the awards in the drama category, giving us stage time to talk about our vision and the ability to present the winner with a gift from the Freedom Film Distributors catalog.

While we have done several Freedom Film events this summer, this was our largest local event so far. It was great to share our family and distributor vision with those in our community. We look forward to the opportunity to serve in new and exciting ways, starting with our first movie night next month.

Matyas family at Newport Ag Fair for Freedom Film Distributors

This past weekend I took my family to our local town's 75th annual Newport Agricultural Fair (the oldest in Virginia) and we set up a booth to sell our products and meet and greet our neighbors. While it was primarily a booth for Freedom Film Distributors, we also took the opportunity to support some friends of our that also have home businesses. So next to the large selection of DVDs that make up the Freedom Film Distributors catalog, we set up a display of the Goat Milk Soap made by our friends Jim and PJ Jonas in Indiana, and a display of the Slickepott All Natural Chocolate Fudge Sauce made by my friend Ian Lamont in upstate New York.

We had a great response to the Freedom Film Distributors presence and collection of video resources, and it was a great opportunity to meet other families that are interested in God-honoring and family-edifying films. I was even blessed by the visit of a young lady named Billie Huskey who is a quadriplegic after a severe auto accident 5 or 6 years ago. For someone who had to learn how to talk again, it was a beautiful experience to see her bubbly personality and positive outlook on life that comes from her faith, and to learn how she is impacting other peoples lives as a physical therapist (yes, the licensed professional kind) and a motivational speaker.

Most importantly, we used this opportunity to train our children about the importance of hard work, attention to detail, industry, and the selling skills of communication and friendliness. My two daughters, age 6 and 4, made over two dozen beaded necklaces and bracelets during the week before the Fair that we set up on a display outside of our booth. My oldest daughter Lydia is naturally outgoing, and she would go from handing out samples of goat milk soap to asking people if they wanted to see her collection of home made jewelry. She was even consistent in closing each engagement with "would you like to buy one?" When faced with the engaging personality of this bright-eyed six year old, most were fully ready to make a purchase as soon as she asked.

In all, this was a great opportunity to meet many of our neighbors in our valley and the surrounding areas, and talk about family business and family films. It is encouraging to know that this kind of community engagement has been happening all over the nation with our existing distributors, and will continue to grow in frequency and impact in the months and years to come.

If this report is encouraging to you, would you consider joining us as a distributor or movie night host, or spreading the word to friends and family about the opportunity we provide? Thanks, and we hope to see you next year at the Fair.

The Wintons visit the Highlands of Virginia

The Wintons play in the Virginia Highlands

The Wintons are enjoying the east coast portion of their cross-country tour, and they had the opportunity to stop in the Blacksburg, Virginia area to visit my family and perform a concert for friends and neighbors.  Their wonderful performance of bluegrass gospel music was a perfect fit for the Sinking Creek Valley where we live, where this kind of mountain music has a long history.  Attendees were excited to see all the films from the Freedom Film Distributors catalog, in addition to enjoying their great music and fellowship in our little spot of heaven in the Virginia mountains.

It was a joy to spend some time with their lovely family, and witness the beauty of a father and sons working together, supported by their wife and mom, who helps keep them on time and ensures all the little details are taken care of.  Many thanks to the Wintons for coming to visit and blessing us with their presence and their music.  Y'all come back, now.

Faith, Family, and Freedom in Virginia

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

We’re having a great time with thousands of home educators at the 2010 HEAV Convention in Richmond.  There is wonderful attendance this year at this very well-run conference, with hundreds of volunteers that make this event possible.  I caught this sight of a father and daughter browsing products at our booth that really demonstrates a wonderful and unique aspect of home education – just being together.

The feedback on our products and vision for sharing them in communities across the nation has been very positive.  We look forward to what God has in store for Freedom Film Distributors in the days and weeks ahead.

The most popular product so far for the weekend is the American Heritage Digital Library, which is an outstanding value for a massive educational resource such as this.

Meanwhile, up in Connecticut

Friday, June 11th, 2010

While Steve Morales and family are meeting homeschooling families in Virginia at the HEAV Convention, Alan Hillman and family are on the road again, this time in Connecticut at the CT TEACH homeschooling convention.  Now at their 5th homeschooling convention of the year, our road warrior distributor family is excited about this last convention before they get a chance to rest for the summer.

As always, the Hillmans set up a beautiful display of their DVDs from the Freedom Film Distributor catalog and other products that they sell through their Honeysuckle Farms family business.

Getting Ready in Virginia

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Founder Steve Morales has been working hard lately with the help of his older children to get ready for this day.  Today is the start of the Virginia homeschooling convention hosted by Home Educators of Virginia (HEAV) in Richmond.  Before packing up and getting on the road, they did a mockup of the Freedom Film Distributors display table.  As you can see, there was a lot of anticipation and excitement to be found.

Stay tuned for updates from the convention, as we share the vision of Freedom Film Distributors with home educators from across Virginia.

The Wintons at the Creation Museum

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

The Wintons, one of our distributor families from northern California, are on a cross-country tour this summer and playing concerts to the delight of many across the country.  They recently had the pleasure of visiting the Creation Museum in Kentucky, and were invited to meet and play for the museum staff, including Answers in Genesis founder Ken Ham.

You can read more about their visit and see more pictures on Ken Ham’s blog.  Stay tuned for more news from The Wintons as they continue their tour across America.

The Hillmans on the Road Again – All the way in PA

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Alan and Shelley Hillman have been busy lately.  Very busy.  After having a productive and busy weekend at the Massachusetts HOPE convention two weeks ago, they traveled last week all the way from Maine to Pennsylvania to attend the CHAP homeschool convention, one of the largest in the nation.  (It seems we don't yet have any distributors in PA willing to go sell lots of our products to eager buyers at a place like CHAP – if you or someone you know in PA might be interested in Joining Us, read more about Becoming a Distributor.)  They had a special treat while there, meeting up with our Director of Distributor Support, Scott Eash, pictured below.

Scott Eash visiting Hillmans booth at CHAP

The Hillmans don't do anything small, it seems.  They have a strong desire to establish an atmosphere, even as a vendor at a large convention, where people can relax and enjoy fellowship while browsing their Honeysuckle Farms product library (and it literally looks like a library).  They have had many wonderful opportunities to talk to and even minister to people by related the stories from the films in the Freedom Film Distributors catalog, as well as from their own journey of faith.

Of course, to get such a wonderful vendor display set up requires a hefty logistics effort, which Alan deftly handled with his two red monsters.
