SAICFF Jubilee Awards for Best in Christian Film

Thursday, March 1st, 2012
SAICFF 2012 Jubilee awards stage
This year’s San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival (SAICFF) was by all accounts, a fantastic event. SAICFF has become the largest independent Christian film festival in the world, and awards the largest prize for any independent film festival – the $101,000 Best of Festival Jubilee Award.  SAICFF Founder Doug Phillips proclaimed "Our mission is to inspire, encourage, reward and ultimately to build a replacement industry for Hollywood. Too many simply complain about Hollywood's darkness. Our mission is to light candles of hope by affirming those films that exalt what is true, good, and noble."
SAICFF 2012 Christian Filmmakers Academy Doug Phillips and panel
The Christian Filmmakers Academy ran for three days before the film festival, and was a great time of learning and networking. Students at the CFA were treated this year to talks by film industry veterans like Kirk Cameron, Stephen Kendrick, Geoff Botkin, Tryg Jacobsen and others. There was more emphasis this year on the business side of filmmaking – film promotion and distribution – which is much-needed from our perspective as one of the only alternative film distribution companies around. We’re excited that there is now more discussion of this fourth part of the SAICFF mission statement: “To facilitate the development of alternative and independent vehicles for producing and distributing films outside the Hollywood machine, which will build, bless, and benefit the American family.”
The Film Festival was an exciting lineup: six semi-finalists for Feature Film, 25 semi-finalists for documentary, seven semi-finalists each for Creation and Great Commission categories, 16 semi-finalists for short film, nine semi-finalists for Young Filmmaker, and five semi-finalists each for Promotional Media and Commercial Advertisement.
SAICFF 2012 Jubilee winners - Fernandez, Gunn, Kendrick, Doug Phillips, Garcia, King
The 2012 SAICFF Jubilee Award Winners included:

SAICFF 2012 Steven Kendrick acceptance speech for Courageous

Courageous producer Steven Kendrick gave a moving acceptance speech. "I want to take this opportunity, as we made a movie about fatherhood, to honor my father," Kendrick stated. "He was the chainbreaker in our family . . . and there's no one who's had a greater impact on our lives [as] his sons."

"The motto of [Courageous] was: Dads need to stand up and turn their hearts toward the Lord and say, 'As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord,'" continued Kendrick. "And it was our Dad that taught us to do that, and it's an honor to pass on that legacy to our children."
Three of these Jubilee award winners are currently scheduled to be screened nationwide in the coming months through National Movie Night, a project of Freedom Film Distributors designed to enable grassroots promotion of independently produced films. We are working on adding other finalists and award winners to the National Movie Night schedule and our catalog of independent Christian films.
IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America
The nationwide premiere of the SAICFF Best Documentary winner IndoctriNation is scheduled for March 16-18thIndoctriNation takes a hard look at the true state of public education in America, its humanistic origins, and whether Christians should be giving their children over to the state education system.
IndoctriNation producer Colin Gunn stated that Indoctrination was made for "others out of genuine love for the concerns of children in America. We were so blessed to give this message. And at the end of the film [we] make it clear: The problem with public schools is that [they] drive children away from Christ. And that was the real reason for making this film, and we pray that the Lord was glorified in it."
Two Hats - 2012 SAICFF Best Great Commission Film winner
The nationwide premiere of the SAICFF Best Great Commission film winner Two Hats is scheduled for March 30th – April 1st. This moving documentary about Brad and Deborah Wells and their 7 children leaving Idaho to go to the missions field in Papau New Guinea follows them through both setbacks and accomplishments as they share God’s Word, raise a family, and establish the country’s first Christian radio station.
Two Hats producer/director Andrew Garcia accepted the award, saying "This is an incredible honor, and I want to start by thanking my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Without Him, this film would never have come to be. . . . And then, of course, the missionaries who were in the film . . . and the thousands of missionaries all over the world. Even as we sit here tonight, who are faithfully serving — not with eye-service as men-pleasers — but as unto the Lord. This award is dedicated to them."
Crying Wolf - 2012 SAICFF winner of Best Creation Film
The winner of the SAICFF Best Creation film Crying Wolf will be screened nationwide for “Earth Day” weekend April 20-22. Crying Wolf is about exposing the lies and proclaiming the truth about what the movement to bring back wolves to Yellowstone – and the rest of America – was, and is, really about, examined through the lens of biblical stewardship and conservation.
"[T]his project wasn't [fundamentally] about wolves or wolf re-introduction," remarked producer Jeff King, "but about reintroducing to the world biblical concepts of stewardship and dominion."

Freedom Film Distributors celebrates its 2nd Birthday

Freedom Film Distributors logo

Two years ago this week, Freedom Film Distributors officially launched our effort to bring independently produced films that promote the values of Faith, Family, and Freedom to communities across the nation and the world through grassroots promotion and distribution efforts. It has been a challenging journey thus far, but we are thankful for the opportunity that God has given us to help families across the country get involved in promoting great movies in their local area.

FFD families at Family Economics Conference

We have independent distributors across the country that are raising awareness about independently produced films through networking, attended local and regional events as exhibitors, and through hosting movie nights. Many of our distributor families have found great fulfillment in working together as a family in a simple and straightforward family business, one that even young children can participate in and develop important life and business skills such as planning, accounting, marketing, sales, and customer service. Most distributors have joined us because they love the films that we promote – many have had life-changing influence on them – and their passion for sharing the messages of the films motivates them in their local promotion and distribution efforts. If you love family films and want to promote them in the context of a family business, please consider joining us as a distributor.

National Movie Night - Join us and host a movie night in your community!

Our National Movie Night project started last fall by premiering several new films nationwide, including Agenda: Griding America Down, which won the $101,000 Best of Festival Grand Prize at the 2010 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival, and Divided, a controversial film that has had a huge impact on they way that Christians consider children and youth ministry. Since then, National Movie Night has held nationwide premieres of Resisting the Green Dragon, Jimmy Valiant: Scions of Danger, An Inconvenient Tax, Dale Evans: Beyond the Happy Trails, Gather the Family, Crying Wolf, and a special pre-release screening of Rescued: The Heart of Adoption and Caring for Orphans. There are several new films being released soon that we will be adding to the 2012 schedule, so if you'd like to host a movie night to expose friends, family, and neighbors to these great films, please Sign Up to Host a Movie Night today!

The Films

Here are some of the significant films that Freedom Film Distributors has worked to promote these past two years.

A More Perfect Union DVD

A More Perfect Union is the only feature-length film that portrays the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and is an important educational tool needed to provide the understanding needed to restore the American Republic.

AGENDA: Grinding America Down is a groundbreaking documentary about the Marxist agenda to systematically take control of the major institutions of American power.

Divided has become a very controversial film that discusses the modern ministry model for children and youth ministry, how that model has failed, and what the Bible says about the issue.

Indoctrination movie

IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America is a breakthrough documentary that reviews the history of government education in American – its founders and their worldview, the development of the public education institution, and the effects it has had on our culture and society.

Gather the Family is the first film that portrays families practicing Family Worship and provides an essential tool for fathers that want to lead their families spiritually.

The Homestead Blessings series is a one-of-a-kind collection of practical how-to videos on the lost arts of homemaking and homesteading.  From gardening, canning and cooking to candlemaking, sewing, and soapmaking, this series has something for every current or aspiring homemaker.

Thanksgiving for Faith, Family, and Freedom

Friday, November 26th, 2010

First Thanksgiving

We at Freedom Film Distributors are very thankful this year.  Thankful that we are nearing the completion of our first year in operation.  Thankful for our staff and families.  Thankful for our distributors and their families.  Thankful for our movie night hosts.  Thankful for the producers that have partnered with us to promote their films through our unique distribution model.  Thankful for you, our supporters and customers, who have helped us spread the message of grassroots film distribution.

As Americans, we must be thankful and remember the providences of God in the life of our nation – both today and in times past.  While people often remember what they are thankful for in the past year, few remember what to be thankful for from 100 or 200 or 300 years ago.  To help us remember, let's enlist the aid of some of our founding fathers to remind us of our blessed and godly heritage, that it might encourage us to be thankful and to work diligently to preserve and carry on the godly legacy of Faith, Family, and Freedom that we have been recipients of.

William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth colony, wrote of the Pilgrims' arrival in Cape Cod in 1621:  William Bradford statue

"Being thus arrived in a good harbor, and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven who had brought them over the vast and furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils and miseries thereof, again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element. …

But here I cannot but stay and make a pause, and stand half amazed at this poor people's present condition; and so I think will the reader, too, when he well considers the same. Being thus passed the vast ocean, and a sea of troubles before in their preparation (as may be remembered by that which went before), they had now no friends to welcome them nor inns to entertain or refresh their weatherbeaten bodies; no houses or much less town to repair to, to seek for succour. It is recorded in Scripture as a mercy to the Apostle and his shipwrecked company, that the barbarians showed them no small kindness in refreshing them, but these savage barbarians, when they met with them (as after will appear) were readier to fill their sides full of arrows than otherwise. And for the season it was winter, and they that know the winters of that country know them to be sharp and violent, and subject-to cruel and fierce storms, dangerous to travel to known places, much more to search an unknown coast. Besides, what could they see but a hideous and desolate wilderness, fall of wild beasts and wild men—and what multitudes there might be of them they knew not. … If they looked behind them, there was the mighty ocean which they had passed and was now as a main bar and gulf to separate them from all the civil parts of the world.

What could now sustain them but the Spirit of God and His grace? May not and ought not the children of these fathers rightly say: "Our fathers were Englishmen which came over this great ocean, and were ready to perish in this wilderness; but they cried unto the Lord, and He heard their voice and looked on their adversity," "Let them therefore praise the Lord, because He is good: and His mercies endure forever."

The Continental Congress declared a national day of Thanksgiving and prayer in 1777:  Second Continental Congress

" Forasmuch as it is the indispensable duty of all men to adore the superintending providence of Almighty God; to acknowledge with gratitude their obligation to him for benefits received, and to implore such farther blessings as they stand in need of; and it having pleased him in his abundant mercy not only to continue to us the innumerable bounties of his common providence, but also smile upon us in the prosecution of a just and necessary war, for the defense and establishment of our unalienable rights and liberties; particularly in that he hath been pleased in so great a measure to prosper the means used for the support of our troops and to crown our arms with most signal success:

It is therefore recommended to the legislative or executive powers of these United States, to set apart Thursday, the 18th day of December next, for solemn thanksgiving and praise; that with one heart and one voice the good people may express the grateful feelings of their hearts, and consecrate themselves to the service of their divine benefactor; and that together with their sincere acknowledgments and offerings, they may join the penitent confession of their manifold sins, whereby they had forfeited every favor, and their humble and earnest supplication that it may please God, through the merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to forgive and blot them out of remembrance; that it may please him graciously to afford his blessings on the governments of these states respectively, and prosper the public council of the whole; to inspire our commanders both by land and sea, and all under them, with that wisdom and fortitude which may render them fit instruments, under the providence of Almighty God, to secure for these United States the greatest of all blessings, independence and peace; that it may please him to prosper the trade and manufactures of the people and the labor of the husbandman, that our land may yield its increase; to take schools and seminaries of education, so necessary for cultivating the principles of true liberty, virtue and piety, under his nurturing hand, and to prosper the means of religion for the promotion and enlargement of that kingdom which consisteth in righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

And it is further recommended, that servile labor, and such recreation as, though at other times innocent, may be unbecoming the purpose of this appointment, be omitted on so solemn an occasion."

President George Washington issued the first presidential proclamation of the United States in 1789:  George Washington

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor– and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be– That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks–for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation–for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war–for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed–for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted–for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

and also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions– to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually–to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed–to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord–To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us–and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Geo: Washington

We have much to be thankful for.  Let us remember, be grateful, and tell the generations to come of God's faithfulness.

I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. — Psalm 78:2-4

A Good Report from the Maine Homeschool Convention

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Alan Hillman provided a report late Saturday of great success at the first homeschool convention of the year – the Homeschoolers of Maine Convention held Friday and Saturday in Rockport, Maine.  While there was success in terms of product sales, even greater was the opportunity realized to fellowship with and minister to homeschool families through the Hillman family’s experience and by offering the life-changing films in the Freedom Film Distributors catalog.  The Hillman family’s vision to do business as a family was on display, as their children helped them work their booth, including writing receipts for customers and making change, in addition to offering the products that their children make at home for their Honeysuckle Farms business.  Their children were able to interact with other children of attendees and exhibitors, and the picture of a family working together proved to be powerful.

Grace Hillman at Maine homeshool convention with Freedom Film Distributors

Alan reports: “Our daughter Abigail had also made some dolls called “His World Dolls” and each one has children that are from a different country.  On our website she puts the family name, nationality, a little about their country, and the favorite family bible verse for that family. She sold three sets of those and thats a double blessing, actually triple:  we are blessed to see other girls happy to play with innocent godly dolls (one little girl paid with her own money), our girls were blessed, and the final blessing comes from the fact that Abigail donates 10% to Operation Nehemiah Missions to the Sudan!”

The Hillmans created a wonderful booth display, including items related to the films they were offering to present a more tangible understanding of the content.  This use of candles made by the West Ladies featured in the Homestead Blessings DVD series is one good example.

HSB Candles at Freedom Film Distributors convention booth

Interest was so great in their booth that they found themselves being flooded with shoppers even after many other vendors had closed their booths.  Alan told us that “Shelley and I were both talking and ministering to separate people and all of a sudden we had 4-5 people looking at DVDs.  The woman in the pink (pictured below) had walked a friend over and was going through each Homestead Blessing DVD and was explaining it to her what each one was about in detail.  The other people there listened intently” and this customer’s sharing of her experience with the films led to her friend making a purchase before leaving.  When your customers make the sale for you, you’re in good shape!

We are excited to see other distributors engage with the public at upcoming conferences and other events, so be sure to stay tuned for more updates.  If you are inspired by the Hillman family’s example and are interested in getting involved, see the Join Us section of our website.

Freedom Film Distributors on Generations Radio with Kevin Swanson

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

The Founder of Freedom Film Distributors was interviewed this week on Generations Radio with Kevin Swanson  about the opportunity to be a part of our effort to bring God-honoring films to communities around the nation and the world. Kevin expressed his excitement about the opportunity that Freedom Film Distributors offers families to help build up their family economy and impact the culture in a positive way. You can listen to the entire interview on the Generations with Vision website .

Why Freedom Film Distributors? Perspective from the Founder

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Many have asked how Freedom Film Distributors came to be.  During the latter part of 2009, five ideas and interests converged in my mind and heart.   Each of these are exciting alone, but when combined, they are powerful and I hope they will be used to meet some very important needs that exist in America today.

Path 1 – Assisting Entrepreneurs

As an entrepreneur since the age of 12 with my first lawn service, I learned the value of taking on responsibility at an early age, working hard, and earning an income while dreaming big and fulfilling a need in the marketplace. From my experience at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia and running both domestic and international businesses for the past 20 years, I like to brainstorm business ideas with friends and help entrepreneurs stake out a opportunities for themselves.  Entrepreneurship is at the heart of what we’re doing, and both new and experienced entrepreneurs will be able to learn and grow through an independent film distribution business or by hosting a movie night with one of our films

Bottom line – I love to help people.

Path 2 – Individuals need income opportunities

Many factors make 2010 a great time for someone to start a business or find a business opportunity that fits their lifestyle.  There are tens of thousands of underemployed or unemployed professionals who need to keep busy, stay engaged in the marketplace and earn an extra income.  Additionally, tens of thousands of homeschool youth and graduates desperately need an outlet for their creativity, drive, and desire to blaze their own financial future through honesty and hard work. This need will only grow over the next 10 years.

Bottom line – Thousands need additional household income.

Path 3 -  Investing in God-honoring films

For the past 18 months, I have worked with private investors and film producers to create a scalable, repeatable business model for investing in films that strengthen, encourage, and edify both individuals and families.  With one investment fund for family films completed and the second fund underway, it has become evident that there are plenty of financial resources available for producing God-honoring films, if the risk associated with such investments can be reduced and mitigated.  Film producers and investors need to have confidence that they will be able to sell thousands of units of each new title upon release.

Bottom line – Capital exists to invest in films, if the return on investment can be more predictable and thus, less risky.

Path 4 – Films change lives

The impact of documentaries such as A Journey Home, which details the dramatic rescue by Tommy Waller of his family from an overcommitted, overworked, and out-of- control lifestyle is far-reaching and can change the destinies of families for generations to come.  With DVD series such as Homestead Blessings showing families working happily together in the home, or working with their hands such as depicted in Inherit the Land, individuals can obtain a whole new glorious vision for their family.  To succeed in changing the culture broadly, however, we need to get these films in front of many more people.

Bottom line – Increased distribution of the films carried by Freedom Film Distributors will change lives for the better.

Path 5 – People love good films

Often it is difficult to offer suggestions and advice to friends and neighbors on topics such as faith, politics, parenting or lifestyle choices.  Inviting people to a movie, however, is easy.  In addition to signing up distributors across the country, we will also be signing up thousands of movie night "Hosts" who will open up their home, church, or organization for a free community movie night.  With popcorn, fellowship, and a meaningful movie, conversations can begin and lives can be impacted through relationships.

Bottom line – Movies are a great way to engage a community.

Family, Faith, and Freedom

Freedom Film Distributors provides a business opportunity for motivated families and individuals to earn an income while strengthening and educating their community on issues of family, faith, and freedom. In doing so, distributors will also complete an investment cycle by rapidly returning capital to investors through their sale of DVDs which will again open the door to even greater investment capital for God-honoring films.  In a few years, with thousands of screens available to us nationwide to debut new films or to hold movie nights on a particular topic, we will be able to significantly impact our culture for what is true and what is right.  You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Prayerfully consider joining us today!

A Cause To Believe In

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Jason Matyas, Director of Marketing & Recruiting The story of Freedom Film Distributors is just beginning, and there will be many chapters written in the coming years.  This is an attempt to add one of the initial chapters to that story, in the form of my story of how I came to be involved with the Freedom Film Distributors team.  The essential aim of Freedom Film Distributors is to change the culture through the permeation of God-honoring films in our society, to supplant the God-hating films that currently predominate.  This effort will largely be worked out in families, and the effect desired through our films is that of family reformation.  The family is the primary institution of human government, and is the building block of both church and civil government.  It is therefore of primary importance in its need for reformation.  This is important, because the journey to my current involvement with Freedom Film Distributors began with a family reformation.  While I was excelling in a military career as an Air Force pilot, on a path for early promotion and command, God turned my heart to my family and grounded there a realization of the importance of establishing the foundation of a godly heritage for my children and grandchildren.  What quickly followed was a 180 degree turn of my life course, with the realization that in order to disciple my children most effectively, I needed to homeschool them; in order to homeschool them most effectively, I need to be home as much as possible; in order to be home as much as possible, I needed to become an entrepreneur that was able to decide my priorities and time commitments.  So I determined to leave active duty after over 11 years and strike off with my clan into the uncharted waters of entrepreneurship.  After God's great providence in giving me some wonderful mentors and opportunities to quickly learn many aspects of entrepreneurial business, I have developed some important skills in the use of information technology and its application to many business challenges, among them marketing, sales, training, planning, and business processes.  I was fortunate to have the opportunity to lead a turnaround of a troubled computer training organization for my primary mentor and spearhead the launch of a social media marketing service for a successful internet marketing entrepreneur.  Networking, and social networking especially, has been very important in my development as a business leader, and it was through networking that I found and worked on both of those former efforts. So it should come as no surprise that I learned of and was offered a role in the launch of Freedom Film Distributors through a connection initiated on Facebook.  The founder of FFD contacted me after seeing interactions that I had had with some of his friends on Facebook and he noted our likemindedness on some important issues, as well as my background in social media.  After a short conversation and reviewing a description of the business model and goals, I was immediately interested in the opportunity, even though my background was not specifically in the film industry. Freedom Film Distributors is rather unique, because in an age of mega corporations with their vast bureaucracies and where a growing role of ecommerce in product sales has marginalized many traditional sales channels, it seeks to go back to the old paths by offering entrepreneurs a chance to run their own businesses and impact their communities through a local distribution strategy.  This is not only unconventional, but also somewhat counter to the trend occurring with media sales in general.  And it is precisely because of that counter-cultural nature that it will succeed.  By relying on independent distributors across the country that operate as entrepreneurs, many of the constraints on the creativity and resourcefulness inherent with a smaller team will be eliminated and allow these distributors to do what works most effectively in their territory.  Furthermore, since the distributors are members of a network that will utilize collaboration tools and have the support of a corporate office that provides training and support resources, the advancements made by individual distributors will be shared, used, and improved by others in the network, leading to greater effectiveness for the whole.  A distributed entrepreneurial effort in this Freedom Film Distributors network will be a key to our success.  We will be a family of families, all providing mutual support for each other.  And our efforts will be impacting families in our local communities and throughout the nation, as God uses relationships with our distributors and the medium of film to communicate His message of hope, and thus cause reformation in those families, then in the church and civil society as well. After quickly realizing all of this, and having recently freed up some time for a new venture, I accepted Steve's offer to join the team with great excitement and anticipation for the things that God will do through Freedom Film Distributors.  We have found others that have likewise caught the vision and enthusiastically raised their hands to join the team.  Would you prayerfully consider the opportunity to join our team and let others know about it as well?
